Several years ago I had the oportunity to go to Detroit, Michigan with Urban Harvest Ministries for Hope for the City. It is during this trip that I learned the power of prayer and standing up to the enemy. During our week in Detroit, thousands of people across the globe were praying all hours of day and night for God to move and Satan to have no hold over the city. Countless people from accross denomination and color came together and saw salvations and passion for reaching others for the Kingdom of God.
During a quiet time that week, the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart, not in a whisper, but a stern and loud voice. He told me repeatedly to “Get OUT of the trenches.” At first I didn’t understand, but throughout the week He kept leading me to Ephesians 6 and The Armor of God. I became convicted over how much time I spent in church and with church people. At this point in my life, I was spending most of my nights at church. God began to show me that, yes, I need to be in fellowship with other brothers and sisters in Christ, but my calling is not to be just in a church, but to BE the Church. Again I heard, “Get OUT of the trenches.”
I realized that week I had been spending way too much of my time in the trenches of battle, bringing water and food to soldiers, but not engaging in battle myself. God started stirring in my heart to not be so consumed with what happens inside the church and more concerned about fighting the enemy over lost souls.
This weekend, we heard a pastor speak on The Armor of God and he gave a very poweful image. He asked us to take off the white dresses, and put on our uniforms. We are the Bride of Christ, but we too often want to sit in church in our pretty wedding dress, but it is not yet time for that. We will have a wedding feast in Heaven, but until then, we are called to fight! Everyday, every moment, we are called to stand up to Satan’s schemes to see our loved ones and neighbors schemed by Satan find redemption and hope. We are to wear The Armor of God daily and truly see our families and cities changed!
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.”
